Putting our heating on when it’s cold is not something we often give much thought to. These things just work when we need them, right? Well, you will be forced to think about how a boiler functions when something goes wrong with it.
Your gas boiler is a wonderful thing. It’s a great thing that your gas boiler is hidden in the cabinet, quietly doing the job it was told to by the timer, or even an application on your smartphone. Have you ever wondered what it is and how it works? It’s better to know what your boiler does before you ask for help. That way, you won’t appear like an idiot when the repairman comes around. Gas boilers are designed to heat water for radiators. It’s easy to see why. Natural gas is used to heat the water. It is a big improvement over the old situation when we burned coal and wood. They produced a lot of smoke and were environmentally unfriendly. Natural gas may not be the best option as it’s a finite fossil fuel, but it does not produce any stinky smoke.
The water needs a place to radiate heat when it is heated. The clue in that sentence might have led you to believe that this water is going into the radiators. They can be mounted on the wall in the traditional way or now come in a wide range of funky designs and colours for the arty types. The hot water in them warms the radiators to the touch. This heat radiates or spreads through the entire room.
We know the boiler uses natural gas to heat the water and that it goes into the radiators, but how? Once the water reaches the desired temperature in the tank it starts to flow into the radiators through the pipes. The water pump is one of the key components of the system. The water will not flow without it and you may find yourself and your family huddled around the water tank to keep warm if a problem occurs with your water pump. A regular service will ensure all the components stay in good working order.
