People are highly visual

Human beings are very visual and it begins when we enter the world. As newborns, we are unable to see the clear images of items, which remain blurry and unformed but we were still able to detect changes in the brightness and notice movement. Prior to beginning to differentiate and identify objects, our brain is busy processing and trying to understand what we see.

As we develop, our brains begin to associate what we see with something, even if we do not fully understand the meaning of that object. Visuals connect us to the world as soon as we are born because our brains are biologically designed to respond to images.

Over the last decade, the Internet has experienced an increase of 9900% in the use of images and information that’s visualized. Following that, businesses and companies are increasingly using visuals to advertise and engage their customers. Why? Because they understand the science that shows how many people rely on visual cues on top of everything.

Nearly half of the brain is used for visual processing. Despite having five senses, 70% of all our sensory receptors are found in the eye. Our eyes are far more effective than our other senses and we can see and process images in less than a tenth of a second! Consider how your business can benefit from better visuals.

Visuals are easier to understand and more powerful for us than relying on text alone. Research has shown that only 20% of what we read is remembered, only 20% of what we see is recalled but 80% of the visuals that people see will be remembered.

One of the most important aspects of visuals is that they evoke emotion, whether it is hate, love, anger, shock, happiness or delight. The things we around us create strong emotions in everyone and our brains adore emotions, more so even than visuals! Our feelings and brain processes are the things that make humans tick. Humans actively seek visual stimuli because of the way they generate emotions. It is this relationship that we crave, and no matter what emotion is caused, fear, despair, joy to horror – it does not need to be a positive image to make that connection. Emotions help us to survive, to make decisions and better understand the world around us.

Raw emotion is the most powerful connection we make for visual content and they come from the region of the brain associated with survival instincts like reactions fight-or-flight. The response comes from our subconscious, directly from our central nervous system.

It’s important for companies to recognize the importance of visual as 60% of customers are more likely to visit an online business that has an image in the search results. As many as 67% of consumers admit that a clear picture is more important than customer reviews or product information!

To see visually appealing information more interesting and if it is well designed, the interest can be generated before the information is even fully processed. Best visual work should be easy to interpret as our brain is designed to interpret the relationship between objects, providing us with an immediate understanding with as little effort as possible.
